Unit 2 - The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920)

Directed by Robert Weine. This film is just like Tim Burton's films with the dark and eerie feeling from the background and as well as the characters. Defiantly Cesare with the dark circles round his eyes to give him a mysterious look. The objects in the film gives off an eerie feeling by their shadows. Now, I know where Tim Burton gets his inspirations from.

"I can't even explain the feeling you get watching this, its like the deep dark secret of Alfred Hitchcock, John Carpenter and Tim Burton all rolled into one.em>
(dthink, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, IMDb, 2006.)

"Meanwhile, Tim Burton owes about 80 per cent of his visual schematics to Dr Caligari. With their famously weird angles and painted lights and shadows, those German Expressionist sets not only echo the characters' skewed mental states but also saved a fortune on electricity."
(Ali_Catterall, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, IMDb, 2009.)

What I noticed in the film that the environment is all like a concept painting but has a dark side to it than a happy side. Like a Tim Burton movie, the buildings have a twisted look to it to give off the dark feeling in the environment as they are slanted, not as wide and are taller than what the original buildings look like in reality.

"The exterior scenes often include painted backgrounds featuring houses with sloped roofs and jutting edges, along with mountains that seem to twist and curl upwards into the sky. Although these backgrounds are not three-dimensionally realistic, they convincingly depict the gothic, surrealistic atmosphere with imagination and verve."
(William Ploch, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, IMDb, 2001.)

The film is good, like a horror movie mixed with CSI but seems to be more of a horror. That would be the type of thing my mum would watch. The storyline is great, though it was quite long but it was great. I adored the environment with it's eerie feeling and how they are made is brilliant. I defiantly loved the buildings with its twisted feeling like you know that this movie won't have a happy ending.
