Unit 2 - Preparatory Studies for 2nd Concept Piece 1

This is what I started first as a brief idea on what's inside the moon. I was practicing with the blocking of cave walls to look rocky.









Started another canvas and got into drawing the cave walls and the metal bridge. I also tested some shading to the bridge which I am pretty proud off. So I continued with it that made it slightly 3D-ish.









Next, I coloured it in and tested with the lighting of the blue light, mentioned in the book. Didn't like it so I tried the same technique I did with the sun on my first concept piece.









Using the colour dodge to create the blue light affect I am after, it turned out well than the effect I did before. However, it was too blue so I blended it with the actual colours that the cave walls and the bridge should be giving the effect now.









When the book mentions water drips falling into the gratings into the astronauts prison, it's more likely they came above on the cave walls and ceiling so I added that. I tried my best with the water drip effect but I'll ask Phil about it in Photoshop.









Added crystals to my piece while making the water drips less distracting to the viewer.

Unit 2 - Concept 1 (In Progress)

Unit 2 - Preparatory Studies for 1st Concept Piece 1

This was a brief idea at the time when developing my first concept image. When I was told that the book was published 50 years before we know what the moon looked like on the surface, I decided to take the craters away. The Moon plants I did on this image was changed soon after as well as the position of the rocks.






These were the ideas of what my moon plant would look like for the first concept piece. I mixed it up with about two plants and a weed to create it.







Created the background and then added sketches of the plants as well as the seeds. However, I decided to change the seeds to look less of the seeds of a dandilion. The plants were changed slightly with the piosition of the leaves.







When I thought I was finished, I forgot about the fog that was mentioned in the book so I added it in.







The fog didn't look right so I decided to change it to make it look like one is overlapping the other from front and back of the front rocks and plant near the bottom part of the image.







When I have finished doing the fog, I realised a few plant seeds have gone from the front part of the rocks so I added them. It's properly because I accidently removed the layer with them on or erased it.







Added the seeds that were left out and in the progress, I didn't like the whole thing. As what I was told, the moon looks too flat and needs to lessen down with the brightness of the colour. The plants look absolutely terrible and liked the first design better.








Redone the whole thing. Created my image and cropped it smaller to make it bigger. Used solid coolours and shaded in to be ready for colouring.








Added colour and then the plants. Didn't like the plants at all so I redone them.







Added more stuff like the glowing seeds, fog, mountains, rock textures, shadows and the redrawn and coloured plants. I would say this is much better than the other one.

Unit 2 - Barbarella (1968)

Directed by Roger Vadim. This film gives off a dark feeling by the sceneries of the labyrinth and the dark city. The characters in the Labyrinth gives off an eerie feeling by what they are combined with. For example, rocks, cobwebs, and more. However, that wasn't the only thing that gave off the eerie atmosphere. Arms, heads and half of bodies are shown in the rocky walls of the labyrinth.




The characters in the dark city feels like your in a pub or in other words, a night club which shows why the film has sexual content. That is because Barbarella is easy seduced by helping other men.

"Therefore our heroine conveys the sexual tension as a wholesome antidote to the more depraved denizens of The City of Night that she ends up exploring, exhibiting two sides to sexuality, the dark and the light."

This review also includes that Barbarella does this for not just repaying for helping the men out but used as an antidote. For example, giving Pygar the will to fly.



The environment is eerie just like the labyrinth but has more of it by the way people look at you like your an outcast. The use of drugs in the film shows that the whole story is showing the cult of the sixties though it is based on the future.

"BARBARELLA is cheaply laid out and stacked with plenty of unimportant and wasteful segments which happily zap your time. But the movie is importantly funny with all of the sex, drugs and rock n' roll as it is what the sixties were about."

Like the review said, the sixties were all over with the use of drugs, rock music and sex. The film is just like that but the drugs are used in a sexual term. For example, when Babarella uses a pill to have sex, it's like using a condom so you won't get any sexual transmited diseases and the part when it features some women smoking man instead of weed.




The part with the dolls was brilliant, just like a horror movie. It is what gives the film more of a horror than just a sci-fi in genre.

Like the reviewn I quoted, this scene is as creepy as the rest which I have to agree on by the way the dolls are designed.

During progress, I added colour to the moon plants and then added the amber affects coming from the sun. When I done that, I added the plant seeds. The reason why I took off the seeds I done in the first part as they didn't look right when shaded so I changed them to something like this.
