Unit 1 - Essay Question

I had helped with Gaby Jones (Student Advisor) with thinking up an essay question for Unit 1. This is what I got.

What do images, texts, artworks, films or games reveal about metamorphosis?

Is this a good question to answer in the Unit 1 essay?

Unit 1 - The Company of Wolves (1984)

This film was rather interesting and has some relations with a children's book called, "Little Red Riding Hood". What's different about them both is that the book, Granny gets eaten by the wolf but a wood cutter comes along and takes her out of the wolf's stomach, replace her with rocks and live happily ever after, while for the film, Granny gets killed by a wolf and Rosaleen has turned into a wolf. Once killed by a wolf, someone closed to you will turn into one. The wood cutter wasn't featured anywhere in the film. The story is confusing as you can't tell if it's telling from reality or a nightmare. However, the stories Granny told Rosaleen shows loss of innocence and fear/hunger for sexuallity which are all twisted into dreamlike shapes.

The film is not a proper horror movie, instead, it's more of a multiple tale about growing up to be a full grown adult. So, it is basically telling you about is to be wise and think carefully on what your answers will be.



This film relates to the Company of Wolves film but it involves not just men, women as well. How the transformation begins if that individual is angry, sad, sees flashing lights or asked to be changed by the Spirit of the Tasmanian Wolf who died in 1960 as it was the last. The Company of Wolves however, the individual changes by the full moon or whenever he/she pleases.

Where it has been featured is in the forest and a little village. Howling however, is featured in a city and the country side.

1. Seeing a normal wolf may not be a wolf at all but a man in a different form. When they bite, they will kill you like your in a nightmare or turn you into a wolf as well.

Quote 1: "A wolf may be more than he seems, the worst kind of wolves are hairy on the inside and when they bite you they drag you with them to Hell."

2. Never stop for a stranger you do not know and never trust them either. They may look innocent but they may turn on you in any second.

Quote 2: Little Girls this seems to say, never stop along the way, never trust a stranger friend, no one knows where it will end, as your pretty so be wise, danger lurks in every guise, now as then tis simple truth, sweetest tongue hides sharpest tooth.

3. Always follow the path. Don't go wondering off deep into the woods.

Quote 3: Once you stray from the path you are lost forever.

Unit 1 - Life Drawing 2

I used the masking tape technique which I learned throughout my course in National Diploma in Art and Design (Interactive Media) in the UCA of Maidstone.




The same thing from the first week of doing Life Drawing but drawn other parts except from just Hands and Feet.

Unit 1 - 3D Pen

I am pretty proud of how it turned out. It was annoying when I got to the hook part for the pen but I managed to go through it.

Unit 1 - 3D Magnifying Glass

This was less irratating when I did that Dice in 3D. Now to do that Pen.

Unit 1 - Digital Painting Test 2

I am quite happy with this except for the tentacles of the creature's left arm as they are smaller than the ones on the right. The shading and all that was fine but I still like to improve more with Digital Painting.

When I finished this creature, I actually thought up of giving it a undersea background. I never done that type of background before but at least I tried.

Unit 1 - Cat People (1942)

Directed by Jacques Tourneur and written by DeWitt Bodeen. Oliver fell in love with Irena and got married. Irena knew she loved him but she fears that she will turn into a cat person as she believes in the ancient cursed stowed upon her homeland in Serbia. So, she tries not to intimate with him. Oliver sent Irena to a Psychiatrist called Dr. Judd, to help her to not worry about the curse as it's just a story. Alice, Oliver's work partner, has a crush on Oliver and Irena found out about it when she spots her with Oliver more than usual. This made her jealous and doesn't want to loose Oliver to Alice.



What I also realised in the film is the statue of Anubis in one of the scenes. I think the producers put it there to show that the film itself contains metamorphosis. Also, cat noises were heard in the film when Alice was walking her way through an ally way to reach a building were she goes swimming. When swimming alone in the pool, she hears the cry of a cat again but, she sees large shadows going across the white walls of the room. She cried for help but when help came, the cat noises and the shadows disappeared. Getting out, she found out that her robe was torn to pieces, which shows that Irena might be a cat women.

1. A thing what cats like is the dark. With their night vision, they won't have any difficulty seeing through the dark. When it comes to hunting, the night is the perfect place to do it as some animals can't see in the dark as well as cats do. Lioness's do it all the time which gives them an advantage.

Quote 1: "I like the dark. It's friendly."


2. A cat will know if your hiding something as cats can be curious animals. They like to explore. Dogs however, will only explore where their owners are. They will not go anywhere further.

Quote 2: "You can fool everybody, but landie dearie me, you can't fool a cat. They seem to know who's not right."


3. Alene believes she is stowed apon the ancient cursed in her homeland, allowing her to do certain things that a cat can do and no other woman cannot.

Quote 3: "She knew strange, fierce pleasures that no other woman could ever feel!"
